The Woolgatherers present "The Caucasian Chalk Circle"
When the Eastern European nation of Grusinia is embroiled in a bitter civil war between its incumbent Grand Duke and its bloodthirsty Prince, only a palace kitchen-maid named Grusha has the courage to save her local governor's baby, Michael. As a result, she flees her home to keep Michael safe from the Prince and his vicious Ironshirt revolutionaries, encountering a madcap cavalcade of citizens who express kindness, incompetence and plain stupidity in equal measure. Armed with nothing more than her own strength, wit and the occasional frying-pan, Grusha must navigate and negotiate with an array of bizarre characters ranging from the hilarious to the monstrous to the useless in order to keep safe a baby she hardly knows.
Meanwhile, back in the capital, the fallout from the war results in an unbelievable series of circumstances which lead to a small-town drunk semi-accidentally being appointed the highest judge in the country. The shell-shocked and amoral Azdak finds himself at the centre of a bitter feud between maid and master which will determine the future of the nation itself, and few dare pin their hopes on his ludicrous sense of justice to result in the correct decision...
With Bertolt Brecht's uncanny ability to perfectly balance comedy with tragedy, his most famous play 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' is a politically-charged story of the advantaged versus the disadvantaged and the goodness of society's most overlooked, downtrodden and oppressed.
